'The Battery' card features a view of the old signal station that sits low down on the cliffs off the west side of the Island. Once the Old Lighthouse had been deemed unfit for use (see the Old Light Card!) the Battery was built in an attempt to solve the problem of shipwrecks.. Finished in 1862 , it had two mounted cannons that fired a blank shot every 10 minutes. These were replaced by rockets in 1878 and the site abandoned when the North and South Lights were constructed in 1897.
